HOSTEL LIFE(boys)
Let us tell you about your future humble abode.
There are 8 hostel blocks plus 3 Mega towers. The blocks are numbered from 1 to 8 with 6 missing and a PG Block. The Mega Towers are for the 3rd and 4th years. The 1st, 2nd and 7th blocks are where the freshers will be allotted rooms. Three people have to share a room (in the First and Second block). The room allocation is done at the time of admission. You can form groups of 3 and ask for a room but you cannot choose which block or room you want to stay in. It all depends on your luck as you are allotted room randomly via IRIS. All the rooms have Wi-Fi connectivity so no matter which block you get you'll always have Wi-Fi with you! There are multiple Wi-Fi routers all round each block. The Wi-Fi speed is tremendously good as well. A Login ID and password will be given to every fresher in the month of August. A maximum of 5 devices can connect to the Wi-Fi using this ID. The college provides 5GB per day for each fresher everyday to use for your purpose. The LAN facility in each room for each student is even better. The speeds go upto 95MBps. There is absolutely no need to bring your own router( in case you were planning on bringing one). Believe me, you want to get yourself into 1st or 2nd block as 7th blocks are pretty lame. The 7th block permits two students per room but sometimes they might fit three if there are more boy students in one batch. But the majority of freshers get allotted into first and second blocks. So it’s not a lot of fun to be all alone in the 7th block. Most of the freshers who get allotted in 7th block, spend most of their time in the first or second block. The rooms are smaller and you'll have to share cupboards. But you will soon find out that 7th block has no block timings! 1st block is better than 2nd relatively in terms of water and LAN facilities.

These hostel blocks are G+2. The ground floor has better water facilities in the washrooms than the first and second floor. But it is more prone to mosquitos. 2nd floor is relatively free from mosquitos. The mess is located in the ground floor. It is quite spacious.
Coming to the electricity, in the odd (first) semester it was pretty decent as there will be minimal power cuts. In the 2nd semester the electricity problem is just short of being branded as a nightmare. But it is still manageable to live. There is one water cooler on each floor i.e. totally three in a block. This will be your primary drinking water source. (At any single instant of time only two will be working). Always drink water from the first floor cooler in 2nd block.

SECOND HOSTEL BLOCK (1st block is similar)
Each floor of block 1 and 2 has 2 wings (right and left). Each wing has 14 rooms .That means 1 wing can accommodate 42 people. The toilet is located at the end of each wing. The rooms are pretty spacious for three people to live. Each room is provided with 3 wardrobes, 3 study tables, 3 chairs and 3 cots. The rooms have 2 fans, 2 tube lights and 2 windows. Mild (funny) graffiti can be seen inside and outside the rooms in the corridor and in the toilet. There are two horizontal steel rods installed in each room which can be used to dry your clothes. Ropes can be bought in the coop to dry clothes, these are tied to the rods.

Also the rooms have a LAN port for each occupant (Totally 3 per room). You will need to bring a LAN cable (or buy one in the coop, but those are of of very good quality) in case you have a laptop. The LAN speeds are pretty good throughout the year. One can browse and stream YouTube videos without buffering. Torrents work on most computers and Wi-Fi can be routed with the help of appropriate software like Virtual router plus or Connectify. All the LAN ports are interlinked thus providing the best platform for late night gaming with your friends. Fair warning. I have seen many flunk the semester because of DOTA and CS.1.6 .
The hostel has 1 TV located in the 1st floor in a common room. (Its usage is maximized during the IPL) . Arguments are common between the IPL and the football (EPL) fans over who gets to watch (The Cricket guys always win!)

The 3 first year blocks are in close proximity (30-75mts) to :
1. Nescafe - Coffee, Tea, Maggi and Pasta (You cannot survive without Maggi).
2. Amul Parlour ? You get everything here. Samosas, Puffs Chips, Biscuits, Coke, flavored milk and stuff like that.
3. Night canteen (Located in 3rd block, 7th block and Girls Block)- This is our lifeline at NITK. They give delivery right till your block gate! Timings: 8pm - 3am!
Other than that, the teaching blocks, playground and respective departments are within walking distances.(10-15 mins walking) No worries. But some seniors make use of bicycles to commute and save time. Motor Vehicles are prohibited.

For the lazy guys who find it difficult/boring to wash their own clothes there is the Laundry Service. Those guys come once in 3 days. The rates are cheap .Their wash is located within the campus itself. They sometimes misplace your clothes but they always manage to find it in the end. There is another Laundry located outside campus on the highway which functions in a similar manner. Delivery in 3 days.
Formal shirts and pants are as such not a necessity for attending classes or for other purposes. For class full pants or jeans or Indian wear is required. T-shirts are fine. You can manage both the semesters with Jeans and T-shirts. Shorts are needed as the summers get very hot.

Not much can be said about ragging in NITK as there "appears" to be almost no ragging in the campus. Try not getting too involved in the party-system.
