Engineer
Heard of Mood Indigo? Yes. Engineer? I bet many of you are scratching your heads.
Engineer or ‘Engi’ as we call it, is the annual technical symposium of
NITK. It is held in the odd semester (i.e. July-December) usually for
around 4-5 days. You will see the college dressed for the festival in
vibrant colours of excitement and joy.
It is generally held in the month of October with the rains coming
to a close and the winter (tit-bits of it) settling in on the beaches of
Surathkal.
From the first day of college you will be back in hostels by say, around 10(exception for block 7 people though). But during
Engineer, cheer up! No block timings for first year boys, there are
some rules for girls though but acceptable. You will be free to roam
around the campus under a blanket of starry skies which you will
often not have in the cloudy metros. It is an amazing experience, we
assure you. The technical part sure is important but experiencing the college at night with friends is an experience to boast of! To top it all we have events taking place at this time of the day, Technites!
The events? Wait.
Talking of the best first, Velocity is an extremely well planned event with participation from many colleges in and around Mangalore up to Mysore. Said to be the flagship event of Engi, it stands up to its mark.
People gather around the arena around two hours early to book seats. Yes, it is true. We need not say more, the track and the cars speak themselves. The winning team takes home a mammoth 25,000 rupees for their efforts. In-house participation is also seen a lot.
Watch robots get (literally) crushed in Robo Wars. I assure you, it is not a great sight and you sometimes feel sorry for the participants
to watch their efforts go up in flames (really) .
This is the last day. What about the rest of ‘em? Don’t worry. There's plenty of stuff happening to keep you busy.
For the Googlers out there, Virtual Bounty is the online treasure hunt competition of Engineer. Some of you might be familiar with what an OTH is, for others it is basically “How well can you Google? “. VB-2016 was really great! It goes on throughout the Engineer schedule. So when you come back to the hostels from the events there is some excitement waiting for you online.
Inscription is the online competitive coding contest of Engineer. It's generally hosted on the Sphere Online Judge platform (SPOJ). NITK is rapidly rising in the ranks of coding institutions on online judges. We have seniors ending up with double digits in Long Contests on CodeChef. If you have no idea what it signifies, well, they are damn awesome! And the problems, if you have competitive programming experience, you will find them tough. Yes, you read that right. Then there is a CTF( Capture the flag) competition, Marathon, for the hackers out there.
For those of you who are battle-ready for their career in Civil or App-
Development there will be workshops conducted by a variety of experts. Ranging from Ethical Hacking to Bridge Design a variety of options await. Some topics may swoosh above your brains, but it is definitely worth a try. To see the fountains dance to your favourite tunes, do visit Symphony! Quizzers, there will be no dearth of quizzing competitions during Engineer. We warn you, they are real hard!
Panel discussions for the debating community and Tech Speak with foreign Profs joining us via Skype or visiting personally if you are lucky enough.
This is a small walkthrough of our fest for those of you who know nothing of it. Make the most of these days to interact with seniors( they come out of hiding during this time of the year :P) and Enjai!
