FROM THE EYE OF a father
Many thanks to Sanjiv Marathe for contributing the following article.
Admission process 2014 demystified--
1. Visiting reporting center before final admission- carry all original documents and self-attested photocopies, including documents meant for you, e.g. fee payment receipt or challan copy given by bank, allotment letter given by CSAB to you.
2. For final admission, notice from Dean for documents and DDs required is not obvious on their site www.nitk.ac.in; it's hidden in old announcements. Search Google for NITK B.Tech admissions inurl: nitk.ac.in.
3. Due to heavy rush, admission process took our whole day and continued up to 9 pm. It consists of following steps--
a. At Lecture Hall Complex - A, ask for the place/building/block where admission process is taking place. Go there, get token.
b. When token number is called, show documents for verification. Format for medical certificate cannot be reached from official NITK site menus. But Google's crawler has located it (search for medical certificate inurl: nitk.ac.in). They say it should be from govt. medical officer, but certificate from any registered MBBS doctor will do. Doctor's stamp should clearly show the number. If you don't have this cert, no worries - you can get it at Health Care Center in campus. Similarly, migration certificate can be submitted afterwards.
c. Re-verification of documents and acceptance of institute DD.
d. 10th certificate (one that has your birth date), 12th mark sheet, and Jr. College leaving certificate are retained.
e. There are two more counters though.
f. Student co-operative society form, Rs 30 (we later found that some items in co-op are costlier than outside !!)
g. Go to Hostel Office in block 7 (15 min walk from admission office), submit hostel form and second DD.
h. Go to hostel/room allotment office, in adjacent room.
i. Buy a lock with two/three duplicate keys, go to allotted hostel, claim your room, put your lock, give keys to your room partners.
j. Arrange to get room cleaned. Pay some tip to the cleaner.
k. Visit various shops for mattress, pillow, bucket, etc. Prices vary so shop around first, before buying.
4. Some tips to make life simple-
a. You can get DDs by paying cash at campus bank, but better bring them along with you. Name and place of DDs may vary from that of last year, so read the latest notice.
b. Scarcity of accommodation during admission time. Guest house is always full. Sadanand is costly (Rs 2,200 for AC double room). Sai Suraj is around Rs 1,500 but not many shops or market nearby. Try the three hotels just opposite Sadanand - Shriniwas, Maharaja and Shree Krishna palace (Rs 800 to 1500).
c. Girls hostel has 4 blocks, each meant for different year/type of students. Because number of girls has gone up, some have to stay in basement dormitory (8 in one hall), compared to normal twin sharing in GH-2 (block for first year girls). Just before room allotment look around and pair up with other students, and approach room allotment office together. They will put you all in one room. Those who went single got dormitory. There is no LAN in GH-2.
d. For a local SIM card, you need Aadhar card copy or passport copy. PAN will not work, because it does not have address. Driving license from other is not recognized. Guys/girls from other state, carry dual-sim phone. You need your earlier number initially, until all your friends/relatives get the new number.
e. For bank account opening, Canara bank had put up a stall and the staff was courteous. Fill up the form, two photos, ID proof (driving license from other state will do), no initial deposit, no introductory needed. You get ATM card and account number immediately there itself. (will be activated after two working days).
5. Miscellaneous
a. Airport to NITK, prepaid taxi - Rs 650. No convenient bus. Auto rickshaws, I guess are not allowed to pick up (may be due to pressure from taxi union), but they can drop (around Rs 350 )
b. From Surathkal, while boarding express bus, do ask if it would stop at NITK Guest House. I came across some who refused.
c. Surathkal-NITK Guest House, fare for ordinary bus is Rs 8. For 2 or 2A it is slightly less, I paid Rs 20 for three. Express fare is also Rs 8, if you give exact change. Once I gave Rs 10 and the conductor said, fare is Rs 10 for express !!
d. Food at Sadanand is the best and reasonably cheap. Manager Shanbaug is very helpful and will give you lot of tips on nearby places, beaches and temples.
e. Fruits are costly in campus. If you want to buy in bulk, trip to
Surathkal would be cheaper.
f. Food court (Ocean Pearl) near banks, has good food and relatively cheap. Just avoid rush hours like 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm.
g. VRL buses to Pune/Mumbai stop at NITK guest house, but not at express bus stop; but a few meters ahead - near iron gate. Carry ear plugs/cotton pieces if you don't want to watch movies played in bus.
