A FRESHER'S PERSPECTIVE
I still remember the day I first stepped into this college, seems like just yesterday. On my ride to the college, I felt a roller coaster of emotions. There was fear of not fitting in, anxiety of making new friends, but with that was hope of starting a new life in a new place with new people. Many of you are going to feel the same way. Let me assure you, you are in for a fun and bumpy ride but the steering is in your hands alone; so make sure you drive down the right path.
So the journey starts with the admission day. You will need to fill a couple of forms and submit all your documents. Do go through the checklist of documents on the NITK website. It is a tedious process which requires a lot of waiting and patience. Don't be surprised if things don't start on time. NITK has it's own timezone ; things usually get delayed by an hour or so. The plus point is that you will have to wait in a hall filled with your batchmates. So this is the perfect time to socialize. This was how I found my roommate and best friend in college so you never know; you might be having really deep midnight talks a few months later, with that stranger sitting right across .
Once you finish your admission formalities and hostel allotment, you can go have a look at your hostel rooms. The hostels are quite decent and livable but don't have very high expectations. You will be provided with a cot, table, cupboard and chair. It might seem bare in the starting but after a few weeks of moving in,it won't even matter. Hostel life is the best part of college life. Once you have a group of friends, you are all set to sail through the discomforts. Midnight conversations, singing 'Happy Birthday' at 12 sharp, dancing like there's no tomorrow- you will hold on to these memories for the rest of your life.
Once you have had a look at your hostel room, the next part is moving in. It might be really hard to say goodbye to your parents. You might feel homesick in the starting and there might be times when you just want to go hug your mom but you will be fine. Once you get a group of friends, you might not even want to go home :P . Usually as the days pass, the frequency of visits to home also reduces because you will be busy planning trips with your friends :D.
As days pass by, you will be occupied with classes and academic work. Classes start at 7:55 (not 8, no one knows why) and some of the professors are very particular about punctuality so better reach the class on time or you will be missing attendance. First year classes are usually held in the ATB (LHC -A) You will soon master the art of getting up just 10 minutes before class and still managing to reach the classroom in time. NITK follows the 75% attendance rule very strictly so bunking all morning classes is not a very viable option. Make sure you attend enough classes or you risk getting a FA(Fail due to attendance) ,which means you will have to repeat the whole course.
NITK is not just about academics, it gives you ample opportunities to explore new horizons and work on your hobbies. In first year, you can join hobby clubs such as Artists’ Forum, Dance Crew,Music Club, Astronomy Club . If you are into sports, the college has Basketball, Handball, Cricket, Football, Volleyball and Badminton teams. Your seniors will train you and you will definitely learn a lot from them. We also have a swimming pool so don't forget to get your swimsuits!
The crowd here is a mix, so rest assured you will find people who share your tastes. You might find that a lot of friendships here are forged based on region. Don't do that and use this opportunity to interact with people who come from different linguistic backgrounds. There will be a lot of fascinating stories you get to hear and you will be surprised to see how much you have in common.
All in all, it is an overwhelming experience. NITK is a home away from home. There will be so much happening around you. Do volunteer in fests and attend as many events as you can because at the end of 4 years, these memories will be what you take away from here. You are going to be in a crowd of intellectuals so try to learn as much as you can from your peers and seniors. In the past one year, I have learned much more from the people here than in the classrooms.
So if you have made it in here, brace yourself for the ride ahead. You are going to have the best time of your lives. (not exaggerating)
