THE Beach
The beach is one of the major things that a fresher at NITK brags about all the time to his or her friends. After all, no other college in India has a private beach like ours!In the first couple of days, NITK holds a welcoming for all freshers on the beach, under the banner of
'High Tea'. Nothing very 'high' about it, though; banana chips, a sweet, and some juice. Where's the tea?
Your guess is as good as mine.
So what's the beach like? A cool sea breeze, sand between your toes, the lapping of the waves against you... it's a wonderful feeling. Naturally, the beach is a place to go and hang out with friends. It takes approximately fifteen to twenty minutes to get there from the boys' hostel, and not more than ten from the girls'. This walk to and from the beach is also a memorable part of the excursion.

One rare aspect of the beach is that it is pretty clean. Many beaches in India are often filled with trash and other junk, whereas the NITK beach is well maintained. However, it closes relatively early: around 7 pm. This may have something to do with accidents in the past. In any case, there's not much to see on the beach after dark. One does need to take care - there are no life guards. But by now, that shouldn't have to be explicitly mentioned.
For those who tire of the beaten track, there is a lighthouse next to a temple, both situated quite close to the beach. But be careful, as the lighthouse is notorious for housing beehives. To reach these, one normally exits the eastern campus through the SBI Gate and walks towards Surathkal, crosses the road and uses the 'temple road'.

Most first-years find that their trips to the beach drastically decrease in number after the first semester.
The novelty of having a private beach, after all, lasts only so long.
But we assure you that you will spend the best of your time with your friends here!
