THE DASA LIFE
We’ve heard that the 4 years of graduation are the years you’ll cherish all your life and that you will make the closest friends and the fondest of memories. But seeing so many of our peers going
to top universities all over the world in US, UK, Canada and Singapore etc makes us a little skeptical about our decision of studying in india. But we have the internet is convincing us that NITK is one of the top institutes in India with great placements and future prospects. So all we can hope for is to be able to fit in and have the best time of our lives !
First year girls get twin sharing which means two people per room and you can also pick your roommates if there is anyone in particular you want to room with. If you don’t, then they will pair
you on their own with some other DASA student mostly. There are people from UAE (Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi), Singapore, other gulf countries (Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia etc), and a few from other places. The maids there will do the dusting and cleaning so you don't need to worry about that. The mess has north-indian as well as south-indian cuisine. Tea, coffee and milk is also served everyday along with breakfast and evening snacks.
Another thing on top of our heads is what to wear. Well NITK doesn't have any dress code as such except in the library where you must only wear jeans/leggings or anything that basically does not show legs because, well nobody knows. For classes, your ideal wardrobe must consist of a couple of jeans and tops along with a few kurtis. In hostel you can wear absolutely anything and no one cares. You can pack all your cool cotton shorts, pyjamas, nitghties basically anything
that you want to wear in the hostel. The weather is mostly hot so sticking to cotton will be a good idea. Even though laundry lady comes thrice in a week, laundry will always be an issue for you. Pack one or two dresses also because there will be fashion shows and everything so you can take part in them and in 2nd semester you will get your DASA freshers from the Worlds
Best Seniors (Us) :P!
One problem is the net connection, basically the lack of it. Investing in a photon or a dongle is a good idea and you’ll have data packs on your cells. Another problem is the block timings for first year girls is 8 30 PM which is very annoying in the beginning. But second next year onwards it’ll be till 10. The best times will be during the Fests which will definitely be something to look forward to. Engineer is the tech-fest and you’ll have all sorts of tech-events and no classes. And Incident is the cultural fest and you have DJ nights in SAC(Student Activity Centre) for four nights straight. The whole campus is alive with energy and there are no classes and lots and lots of events. All kind of food stalls will be there in the campus and everyone is out and about even at midnight.
NITK has lots of activities and events going on which will keep you super busy, so busy that you might loose track of time.
Though the clubs only recruit students from second year, you get to participate in all the events and functions.
There are also a few clubs which do take first years like Debsoc (stands for Debating Society.
There’s no MUN in NITK so Debsoc is your platform if you love speaking like me and you also get to go to tournaments in colleges all over india. You also become part of Literary, Stage and
Debating Society).
Then there’s Music Club for those of you who are blessed with beautiful voices or if you can play any musical instrument. Music Club gives performances in SJA, the auditorium, and the
whole campus comes to watch. so you will have your ‘star’ moment.
You also have Artists Forum where you can showcase your creativity and have block extensions before fests for preparations. You also get cool AF badges that distinguishes you from your notso-
artistic companions.
Apart from it you can go for any sport you're interested in. NITK has all the sports like Basketball(with a proper team and training and cool seniors who help you become better and practice everyday and twice a day before a tournament. You also get to go to other colleges for tournaments
and its a great experience).
Then there’s table-tennis, badminton, football and cricket grounds (Though the latter two are conquered by the boys). There’s also a beautiful swimming pool but you are allowed only at certain
timings.
There’s also a photography club and an astronomy club.
There are also activities like quizzes, coding events, robotics club, business events, dance events and workshops. So basically there’s something for everyone. But don’t try to juggle all the activities at once. Pick something you really like and stick to it.
You might feel over-whelmed by this new life and freedom but the grading process is relative and your CGPA is really important. So studying side by side daily ! is really important.
You will also find yourselves at the beach. All the time. Even early morning people go there for jogging and in evenings for chatting or just relaxing and watching the sea after a tiring day classes and labs. Not many campuses around the world can boast of their own private beach.
Also there are over 3k or 4k students living on the campus and you can rest assured that you will find friends as crazy and weird as you are and it’ll be a start of great friendship that will continue long after these 4 years. It’s a big change from our high schools where there were the popular kids or the nerdy kids. Here you are one among thousands and nobody knows who you are and nobody cares what you do. All gossip gets old instantly and you love the people around you because they're your new family. You will meet new friends every week and it’ll be hard to even keep track of so many new people in the beginning. The professors also treat all the students same so you don’t have to worry about that.
So if you're going to join NITK then gear up and get excited because the institute has a lot to offer to students who want to learn and grow. Keep your CGPA in check and you’ll get great opportunities and jobs even after you pass out. Meanwhile, all you really need on the campus is a group of nice friends and you’re all set.
Now everyone has a different story to tell and this is my point of view though I’m sure most of my friends would agree with me. I think I’ve covered almost everything but if you still have any
questions or queries feel free to ask me or any of the DASA students on the campus.
We don’t bite, in fact we’re an absolutely friendly lot. ;)!
