to and from
Want to run home, don't you? Well, you can do that in a myriad ways.
For students living in the nearby areas of Udupi and Manipal, buses ply almost every hour from the main gate. Absolutely no troubles there. People usually go home during weekends in the early stages of the semester.
Then come those from Bangalore and Mysore. There are plenty of options for you people in terms of the availability of bus services. SRS, Sugama, Durgamba to name a few. Generally there are a number of buses every night. The timings are usually between 8-10:30 which is preferred by all. Each bus usually takes a different route near Bangalore so you need to choose the one which will drop you nearest to your residence.
Bookings can be done online and offline as well. RedBus.in is the best option. Near the Girls Block, you will find a shop by the name "Reddy's". Offline bookings can be done here.
Train options are also available. There is the one which leaves the Surathkal station at 7 and reaches Bangalore early morning.
Those without the Home State quota!! You will be the only people, most of the times, in the hostels during long weekends(lasting 3-4 days). But those of you who want to sneak home quick, Mangalore Airport (nobody knows for what joy it has been given an acronym of IXE when the name is Bajpe Airport) doesn't offer you much help. Only two flights, one to Mumbai and other to Bangalore in India. For outstation students, flights to Sharjah has been started very recently whereas a Dubai one flies everyday.
Prepaid taxi bookings can be done via Reddy's to go to the airport. From the airport, you can either take the prepaid service by the airport or a rickshaw.
Those from Jaipur, Chandigarh and Delhi usually have to book a connecting flight via Mumbai. But it usually takes only an hour and 15 minutes to reach Mumbai so not much of a problem. After the end-semesters or before a big break of say 8-10 days (which we got once during Deepawali) trains are more preferable if you travel in groups. Daily trains ply from Mangalore too (just a stop after Surathkal).
Remember to use the acronym KREC if people don't understand NITK at first. From the station, take an auto or a bus!
Bus travel is generally not preferred (takes up a big chunk of your holiday time) for other state students, but some travel services do provide buses to Mumbai, Goa and Hyderabad.
