The four years of college life are the best ones to travel around with your friends, go on road-trips, night-outs and create memories to last a lifetime. So, here is a list of few places around NITK that you must definitely visit during your stay here.

1. Agumbe

This is the perfect place for a day trip (takes only 2 hours by road); a favourite for trekkers and nature photographers. The Agumbe Venugopalakrishna temple is thronged by devotees all round the year.


2. Bekal:

An excellent location for a road trip, this place is famous for the giant keyhole shaped Bekal Fort. The beach surrounding it offers a picturesque sight and the nearby water sports facilities offer loads of thrill.

3. Chikmagalur:

 This is the place to visit if you want to see the sun setting over the hills. A trek to Mullayangiri peak and the beautiful coffee estates are what brings tourists to this town.

4. Coorg/Madikeri:

Almost 3 hours by road from Surathkal, this place is a must-go for anyone seeking a respite from the heat. The Raja’s seat, Madikeri Fort, Abbey Falls and Omkareshwar temple are the main attractions.

5. Gokarna:

The favourite weekend getaway of most students, this town has a rustic and laid-back nature. The Mahabaleshwara temple (one of the seven important Hindu pilgrim centres), Om beach and Kudle beach are the main attractions. Sleeping on the beach and buying a ‘Gokarna shirt’ are the some of the things not be missed.

6. Hampi:

Located within the ruins of the historic city of Vijayanagara and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this place attracts a large number of tourists. The main attractions include the architectural marvels of the Vijayanagara empire (includes temples, tanks, watchtowers, etc.).

7. Kalasa:

At 3 hours from Surathkal, this temple-town boasts of many temples, mainly the Kalaseshwara temple. The five water spots, Pancha Theertha, add to the religious austerity of the place.

8. Karkala:

​One of the nearest places to visit from Surathkal, this town boasts of archaeological landmarks like Gommateshwara Statue, Ananthapadmanabha Temple, St. Lawrence shrine, etc. Since time taken for travel is only 1 hour, this place is a must visit.

9. Kodachadri:

Known for its trekking routes, breath-taking views of the sunset and the beautiful waterfalls, this peak is a must visit. Hidlumane Falls, Arasinagundi falls, Sarvajna peetha, Nagara Fort are among the places to be visited here.

10. Kudremukh:

This town boasts of the Kudremukh National Park and its diverse flora and fauna. The Hanumana Gundi waterfalls and the trek to the Kudremukh peak are the things-to-do in this place.

11. Murudeshwar:

Apt for a day trip due to excellent connectivity by rail, this place boasts of the world’s second tallest Shiva statue. It is also famous for the Murudeshwar temple. The road trip along the coast of the Arabian Sea offers great scenic views.

12. Manipal:

This is the place where you will go for your weekend parties or for your New Year celebrations. There is always a very high chance of coming across people you know in here; be it the clubs or the restaurants. A walk to End Point is a must to appreciate the scenic beauty of the Manipal lake and the picturesque surroundings.

13. Nileshwar:

Located in Kerala, this place is idle for enjoying the famous backwaters and the houseboat cruises. The town is known for its ritualistic art form Theyyam.

14. Ooty:

Located in Tamil Nadu, the hill station of Udagamandalam boasts of the largest rose garden in India. Doddabetta peak, the highest in the Nilgiri range, Botanical Garden and Dolphin View Point are some other notable attractions.

15. Goa

Around 340 KMS from NITK, Goa is very well known as a place to chill and take a break from all the stress at college. There are buses available to Goa. ​
