My Memories At NITK
When I first came to NITK, I saw the words "National Institute of Technology, Karnataka" and was immediately disappointed. I didn't want to be here. IIT was my dream. I hated that I was here and not in an IIT. I never knew I was capable of changing my mind on that. But it happened. Hate eventually turned to fascination and respect for this college.
Hostel life was always a challenge, especially for a pampered kid like me. I had to be independent. Initially, it was hard. There wasn't a moment that I didn't feel homesick. I called home everyday. I didn't socialize much. I had a hard time keeping up with this new lifestyle.
Eventually, things started getting better. When you start spending days together with people, a bond is formed. This bond helped me socialize and have fun. This bond also taught me to adjust. It taught me that it's okay to be selfless.
I lived in a room with 3 people. You need some understanding and adjustment to survive. For example, It had to be decided when the lights would be switched off and who would clean the room in case the sweeper wasn't there. And when someone asked to borrow my shampoo, I gave it without hesitation. If someone had asked me the same before I came here, I would have refused. I learnt a lot after coming here. I learnt how to share, how to be happy, and how quickly you can change your mind about something. This is when I started liking college.
After a month or so, I got used to it. I started having fun. I talked to people. I stayed up all night. I played football in the corridor. I started making friends. They made me feel like I was home. The late night talks and the uncontrollable laughter made it better. I was living with so many people. All these people were facing the same things I was facing. I just had to talk to them.
Now, it's been almost a year at NITK. And I'm glad I'm here. I learnt so much over the past year. I will never forget how much this college changed me. I look forward to everyday at college now. If I could go back in time one year and tell myself that I would eventually love this college, I would have certainly been surprised.
